For summer of 2017, we have made it our goal to sell many high efficiency heating and cooling systems. As utility rates continue to rise, upgrading your old air conditioner is a great way to improve your family's comfort while lowing your electric bills.
Besides old age and poor efficiency, the high repair costs associated with an old system along with ever-increasing utility rates make replacing your air conditioner a great investment in your home. To make an informed decision on what air conditioning system will benefit your home the most, you should first be familiar with some of the terms associated with high efficiency heat pumps. High efficiency heat pumps are rated by something called the seer rating. S.E.E.R rating stands for the seasonal energy efficiency ratio. Basically the higher the rating, the more electricity you save for cooling the same amount of space similar to m.p.g. (miles per gallon with your car's fuel milage).
S.E.E.R ratings for units produced the year 2017 have the minimum rating of 14 with many manufactures producing systems upwards of the 18-20 S.E.E.R range.
Over a relatively short payback period, say 5 years it is very easy to justify economically purchasing a 15 or 16 S.E.E.R system over a 13. Without getting into any boring or confusing calculations, I will leave you with this excerpt from the energy.gov website :
“Today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid 1970s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model. Proper sizing and installation are key elements in determining air conditioner efficiency. Too large a unit will not adequately remove humidity. Too small a unit will not be able to attain a comfortable temperature on the hottest days. Improper unit location, lack of insulation, and improper duct installation can greatly diminish efficiency.”
