The old age and poor efficiency of your old air conditioning and heating system is a great reason to begin planning on replacing it this fall before the harsh winter weather begins. High repair costs on an old system along with increasing utility rates make replacing your air conditioning and heating unit sound better and better every day. What I would like to do is to explain efficiency and the common term S.E.E.R rating with you so that you may make an informed decision regarding your purchase. S.E.E.R rating stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. Basically the higher the rating, the more electricity you save for cooling and heating the same amount of space.
S.E.E.R ratings for units produced this year have the minimum rating of 14 and many manufactures produce systems up to 18-20 S.E.E.R range.
Over a relatively short payback period, say 5 years it is very justifiable economically to purchase a 15 or 16 S.E.E.R system over a 13. Without getting into any boring calculations I will leave you with this excerpt from the energy.gov website :
“Today’s best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid 1970s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model. Proper sizing and installation are key elements in determining air conditioner efficiency. Too large a unit will not adequately remove humidity. Too small a unit will not be able to attain a comfortable temperature on the hottest days. Improper unit location, lack of insulation, and improper duct installation can greatly diminish efficiency.”
We would be more than happy to explain this in more detail within the comfort of your home, so feel free to contact us today for your FREE estimate to replace your outdated air conditioning and heating system that is costing you money. Last time here on the comfort-corner blog, we discussed heat pumps and the different types of heat pumps that are out there. To refresh: a heat pump is an energy efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioning, because they use electricity to transfer air from one space to another, like hot air turns to cold air. While there are different types of heat pumps (air, mini-split, and geothermal), within those different categories you have what’s known as high efficiency heat pumps. These heat pumps still do the same thing as what regular heat pumps do, the only difference is that high efficiency heat pumps have a higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) number and a higher Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). The higher the SEER rating and the higher the HSPF number, the more efficient your heat pump is going to be. If system is up in age, you’re looking at about a 10 SEER rating. Not so efficient, which can lead to more breakdowns, more maintenance work, and more money spent. Instead of just talking about high efficiency heat pumps in general, I’m going to talk about specific units from different brands of heating and cooling manufactures.
All of the information I’ve just listed above can be found on each manufactures websites that will be listed below. Also on their websites, you will be able to find more information on heat pumps and more in depth information on a specific units.
