Happy November! Fall time is here but it’s feeling more like winter every day. With the decreasing temperatures some older units may have a hard time keeping your home comfort. Luckily, there’s a good way to make sure your heating system is prepared for this early winter: WINTERIZATION!
Here’s a few tips on winterization:
- Turn off all the exterior power to the central air unit by locating the circuit outside, hitting the switch, then closing the lid. This prevents damage from happening and will keep the A/C from being turned on.
- Once you’ve made sure it’s turned off, you can start cleaning the system. First, start by raking any leaves, branches, and debris that may be around or on top of the unit. Then take a nearby hose and spray your unit off being sure to get what dirt debris off that you couldn’t before. After spraying it off with some water, let it dry for a couple of hours (be sure it is completely dry) then you can cover the unit with either a tarp or waterproof air conditioner unit cover, securing it with either bungee cords or ties, to protect the unit’s compressor.
- A simple, final step in winterizing your home is to make sure all central air conditioning ducts and vents are sealed off. You can easily do this by using specialty tape that is approved for the sole purpose of sealing off said ducts and vents

The kids are back in school and summer is ending. With the increased in temperatures over the past few months most HVAC units have struggled to maintain a cool home. This is a common problem with a potential common solution: your system may need a new filter.
The purpose of an air filter is to reduce as much dust and allergens from entering the home as possible. During the summer months more dust and dirt are in the air, especially when there hasn’t been very much rain. With the increase in dust the filters become dirty much quicker. When the air filters are clogged with debris the unit has a much harder time pushing the cold air through, which causes the unit to freeze up or stop working. A quick solution is the replace the old, dirty filter with a new, clean one. Although this isn’t always the case, in many circumstances the unit will begin to run as efficiently as before! A great way to ensure that your air filter is ready for the summer is to replace it every 6 months.
