R-22 commonly referred to as “Freon” is the type of refrigerant in the heating and cooling industry that is currently being phased out under the Montreal Protocol. R-22 is due to be phased out of production completely within the next few years. New units charged with R-22 are no longer in production.
We feel it is important to write this blog post to bring up another issue that the heating and cooling industry is facing and should be of great concern to homeowners. Some contractors have been using an unapproved drop in refrigerant known as some of the following brands/terms: R-290, 22a, 22-A, R-22a, HC-22a, and CARE 40. These refrigerant types are propane based, and can cause fires and explosions especially when an unsuspecting technician is servicing your system. It is very important to understand that the manufacturers of air conditioning equipment as well as the federal government do not endorse or approve the use of these propane based refrigerants in your homes air conditioning system.
The next time you are having refrigerant put in your R-22 system take the time to make sure it is new virgin (unused) R-22 (in green tank) and not some unapproved drop in replacement. Remember if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
